1. Introduction

This application (“DCIM Sort”) is an utility app to organize photos into subfolders and compress them. We take user privacy seriously and are committed to being transparent about how DCIM Sort handles data.

2. Data Collection and Use

DCIM Sort does not collect personal information, device identifiers, usage analytics, or advertising identifiers. It does not transmit your photos or files to any server.

To avoid re-reading EXIF data on every run, DCIM Sort stores two small caches in the app's private on-device storage (inaccessible to other apps):

• Coordinate cache — GPS coordinates extracted from photo EXIF metadata, keyed by image identity (internal ID, file size, and capture timestamp). Used to skip redundant EXIF reads on subsequent runs.
• Place-name cache — reverse-geocoded location labels (city, region) keyed by an approximate 10 km grid cell. Used to avoid repeated geocoding lookups for photos taken in the same area.

These caches contain only data already present in your photos' metadata. They are stored locally, never uploaded, and can be cleared by clearing the app's data in Android Settings.

When the Android on-device Geocoder is unavailable, GPS coordinates (latitude/longitude only — no photos or files) may be sent to the OpenStreetMap Nominatim service to obtain a place name. See the Permissions section for details.

3. Permissions

DCIM Sort requests only the permissions necessary to organize your photos on-device:

• Read photos (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES on Android 13+; READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE on Android 12 and below) — required to scan and display the images you choose to organize.
• Write storage (WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, Android 9 and below only) — required to move or rename files on legacy storage models. Not requested on Android 10+.
• Media location (ACCESS_MEDIA_LOCATION) — required on Android 10+ to read un-redacted GPS coordinates embedded in photo EXIF metadata. Used solely to organize photos by location; coordinates are never transmitted off the device.
• Internet & network state (INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE) — used only as a fallback for reverse-geocoding (converting GPS coordinates to a city or country name) when the on-device Android Geocoder service is unavailable. No photos, files, or personal data are uploaded or transmitted.
• Foreground service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC) — allows long-running organization tasks to continue reliably while the app is visible, with a persistent progress notification.
• Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS, Android 13+ only) — used to display progress and completion notifications during organization runs.

All permission-gated operations are performed locally on your device. No files or metadata are sent to any server or third party.

4. Third-Party Sharing

DCIM Sort does not share any data with third parties, advertisers, analytics providers, or external services.

5. Security

Because DCIM Sort does not collect or store any data, there is no risk of data leakage or unauthorized access related to user data.
